Today the only grandfather I've ever had went into rest. Grandpa Tom (my husband's grandfather) had been fighting cancer for 9 years, since about the time I met him. Last February and March we spent nights with him in the ER thinking he would never see April of '06 let alone another Christmas, another new year. We spent this last year going to endless appointments - urologist, radiation oncologist, nephrologist, infusion centers. Pain.
Grandpa thought of me as one of his own. He was always proud to introduce me to doctors, acquaintances, whomever as his grandaughter. He let me convince him that the internet wasn't so dangerous. And he learned how to use a computer & even bought his last ticket to Ireland online. Even in these last few days, he tried to do what I asked of him. Just a little medicine, Grandpa, to help with the pain. He wanted to so much, but he was just too tired. Last night we prayed and I told him my Fancy girl would be waiting for him to make him laugh. And he finally went. As much as we're going to miss him & as much as we will always love him, I can finally take solace in the fact that he went in peace.
